Bakeries/confectioneries such as
Breadtalk and
Fourleaves are a rare find here in the Bay Area. But you can find many good decent bakeries of
Cedele Depot resemblance. Though not as much as hawker food, I sometimes miss bread with savory filling - pork floss loti (
loti or roti is Malay word for bread), chicken curry loti,
loti
hei bi hiam and sambal ikan loti - such quick and easy grab-and-go.
Sheng Kee Bakery and Confectionery at Cupertino Village, offers a narrow selection of bread (with fillings), and it's not as tasty (and creative) as those I've had back in S'pore.

I like all the loti you mentioned, especially the pork floss one from Breadtalk. Pity the pork floss here is not as nice.
ReplyDeleteWhich bread (I mean with what fillings) did you buy from Sheng Kee? One (bottom of picture) looks like green onions?!?
BTW, my rice noodles turned bad and I had to throw them out. So don't keep yours for too long ya?
The Breadtalk porkfloss so much nicer. I did not even try the pork floss loti here since the look of it already...brrrr...unappetizing :(
ReplyDeleteThe one at bottom is green onion and sausage. Think this is one of those few savory loti they hv. Left:"ang dao", right:bolo bun.
How u know it turned bad? The smell arh? ok, ok...i will use the rice noodles soon. Need to clear fridge anyway :p
Oh yes, love those HongKong style barkery, esp. with a cuppa good tea, yummy.
ReplyDeleteCan remember u are a loti person...;p
ReplyDeleteMaybe next time when u back in sg, u have to go for a loti "buffet" at the various bakeries here...btw, don't forget the bakery (Q-Bread?) at Tampiness bus interchange also got a variety of nice breads.
Er.. you will know when the noodles turned bad :p I shan't elaborate.
ReplyDeleteRanch 99 has this cupcake thing (looks taller than the western cupcakes) and it's very light and fluffy. These are freshly baked each day and only available at about 11am. The HK bolo bun from Ranch99 is nice. (I haven't tried the Taiwan bolo bun yet - the cashier said the topping is different)
Chilli Pork Floss bread at Breadtalk is still the best. Makes you drool all over. Bet you miss the Kaya Toast at Kopi Tiam that goes along with a cup of Kopi?
ReplyDeletekoeiru, oh yes, they are a good combo...:D
ReplyDeleteomnivore, well, i still eat loti here But peanut butter+jam with loti. Q-bread got other branches? Tampines is not so near afterall...any Q-bread near ur place ?
simcooks,i think what u're saying is 鸡蛋糕 (egg cake?)? Crystal Jade Bakery in SG has nice ones(original and pandan flavor, if I'm not wrong). Looks like I can try the R99 ones. I like HK bolo buns with char siew inside, actually. Can buy many from Crystal Jade Bakery. Think the Taiwanese bakes are not as nice as HK ones.
fleck, yes, chilli pork floss are good! I even like their simple "earthquake" loti :p
And yes, kaya butter toast with kopi gaw (now even comes in a set with half-boiled eggs)...nice...:D
Yes, dun forget Crystal Jade Cakery. Their bread's good too!
ReplyDeleteNowadays I seldom eat bread. I have been influenced by articles about all the highly refined and processed flour that's not so good. haha... But when you see those roti bakar / kaya toast, you cant help it right? Just eat!
Aiyo...keropok man, you taken away one of the few simple loti delights I have...but don't care ...just eat!
ReplyDeleteI'm not much of a bread eater either, but dunno why, whenever I'm back in s'pore, even the artificially-coloured neighbourhood bread shop variety (without crust), i'll buy and eat without a second thought! :)
ReplyDeleteshilpa, french loti nicer :D
ReplyDeletetiger, depends man... taste-wise, french bread is great, but they're so hard i fear for my teeth! aiyah...
ReplyDeleteErr... think there is one at another place but now forget where is it...=(
ReplyDeleteThere is no Q-bread around my place.

ReplyDeleteI enjoy breads with fillings too. I'm fortunate to have some Japanese bakeries in my vicinity at which I can buy different savory breads.
