Seasoned mahi mahi from Trader Joes contains the following ingredients: olive oil, garlic, lemon juice, parsley, salt, red chilli pepper flakes, black pepper.
"Mahi-Mahi" means "strong-strong" (in Hawaiian). This fish is known for excellent flavor and firm texture. Mahi-mahi is NOT classified as the "Best Choice" of fish to be consumed, but it falls under "Good Alternative". Does anyone keep a pocket size seafood selector like this while buying seafood ? I do keep one in my wallet but only use it when I remember too. Oops! I'm not really fussy about the fish or seafood I eat, but it's best to avoid those, which we are supposed to avoid. And many times, I would think "avoid" in the context of consumption in constant large quantities. Most of us go for "moderation" and "balance".
You can either print and keep a pocket size seafood selector like what I'm using, or print it from another source here. They may just come in handy one day. Who knows?
My grilled mahi-mahi turned out a tad on the saltish side, probably because I

Char boil fish, fantastic idea.
ReplyDeleteI like Mahi Mahi but avoiding it for the moment. And oh.. where did I put my Seafood Selector? I have it somewhere...
ReplyDeleteOh my, yum yum. the fish looks so delicious. I haven't eaten my lunch.
ReplyDeletealso I love pistachios nuts.
thanks for the tip. i will print it. nice. maybe i'll pick up from trader joes. how much did it cost? :D
ReplyDeletekoeiru,no charcoal, so only can use electric grill :O
ReplyDeletesimcooks, so what fish do you not avoid this moment ?
eastcoastlife, 开心果,吃了天天开心!
buddingcook, i only use the selector when i remember to, and when it's not crowded in the supermarket...hahahha
I recalled it cost $5.49...(depending on the wt.)
I eat salmon once in a long while; I eat anchovies (with spaghetti and parsley); I eat sardines... basically the small fishes cos the big fishes eat other fishes and survive longer, so tend to have a higher mercury content. Salmon is a big fish, so I eat sparingly. Dace fish paste - I used for the otak, but eat occasionally too (not sure how big a dace fish is.)
ReplyDeleteWow! What a "green" person you are!?!! Yes, unfortunately, mahi-mahi became too popular in the late 1990s and now are overfished.
ReplyDeleteI don't cook nor buy fish, but I will be more conscientious now about not ordering food on the endangered list.
simcooks, think highest mercury content on the list is sharks! I recalled my sis-in-law says a complete "no-no" to this some-considered delicacy.
ReplyDeleteming merciless, in fact this is the 1st time (in my life) eating mahi mahi :O ...just wanted to try something different once in a while. You don't cook or buy fish, but do you eat fish ?
wahh mahi2 quite delicate to cook, they tend to get overcooked or dry if its not good quality. You got yaself some good mahi2 there :)
ReplyDeleteMW, not too bad...on the dry side, but with the seasoning juices (unfortunately a tad saltish)...it was moist. Maybe I grilled it slightly longer too (leading to dryness) coz I was worried the fish will be uncooked!
ReplyDeleteThink grilled salmon (pale orange color with "stripes") should be nice...but oops...does that sound like eating Tigerfish [Tiger (pale orange color with "stripes") + fish (salmon)]??? haaaaaa....Just joking!
ReplyDeleteomnivore, 吃不得,吃不得 ! To think you came out with that! Buahahahahha....
ReplyDeleteI've been meaning to go to Trader Joe's for a long time to stock up on some yummy goodness. Marinated mahi mahi? Heck yeah! That looks tasty, for sure. I rarely use all the seasoning (or leftover seasoning) that comes with prepped food because it almost always ends up too salty.
ReplyDeleteHmm...a seafood selector. I've never heard of that. I better print one of those out! But I usually let my dad buy the fish, 'cause I have no idea what to look for. ;P
Yuzu, TJs is just steps away from me, tt's why I go there often. But it needs to have good products to keep me going bac' of course! Regardin' the seasoning, yep, I was too greedy this time. Din want to waste. Usually, if I cook my own, it's easier to control the taste level. You can print one pocket selector and show it to your dad, and let him use it!:D
