Nasi Campur, Nasi Padang, Nasi Kerabu...I'm confused! Rice where, rice what

Let me just call it Nasi (XYZ) the meantime because I don't really know what is what. XYZ can be Padang, Campur, Kerabu depending on country and regions/states, I presume. And I always associated Nasi Padang as some kind of Malay cuisine when so apparently, I'm wrong! Nasi Padang originates from Indonesia - “Padang-food” in Indonesia (from Western Sumatra province and is named after the capital Padang). For Nasi Campur, Nasi Dagang, Nasi Kerabu, backStreetGluttons has pictures to tell us all (so, why need wikipedia ?)

Would you order a set with sides like these? Like myself, Lyrical Lemongrass has begedil with rice! Ok, this is my Nasi set with begedil meat potato patties, sayur lodeh vegetable curry, and coriander chicken. Now, I don't know if this is Nasi Padang, Nasi Campur or just Nasi XYZ ?

These are the recipes for the sides. Hope you will like them.
Sayur Lodeh, Vegetable Curry
Coriander Chicken
Begedil, Potato Meat Patties

  1. Well, it's certainly not nasi kerabu which consists of rice and a lot of shredded fresh vegetables and herbs and kerisik (coconut). It could be nasi campur or nasi padang, but can't be sure. Nasi XYZ? Hahaha. Why not, eh?

  6. Wow. It looks so very authentic on the banana leaves. I love it. I often use banana leaves in the summer too. They add a little special something to a dish somehow.

    Delicious!!!

  10. firehorse, yes..I did the cooking :) I can't find any Nasi Campur or Padang in California, so I can't have pictures to post if I don't cook them myself. "Absence makes the heart grow fonder" and sure makes me work harder (in the kitchen).

  11. Hi Mae, yes! And especially if you bake something in those banana leaves, it is sooo...aromatic! It's almost summer temperature today, time to use thos banana leaves, ya?

  12. wow, Firehorse is here as well! :P ok, you lack the rich coconut milk gravy for such dishes.

Nasi Padang is supposed to have been quite spicy (chilli hot).

  16. Yummmy!!! I love spicy food and all the Nasi's which you have listed and then some more. This is probably the reason why I have to keep jogging so that I can still look fine despite being a glutton at heart.

BTW, are you now in Singapore or California?

  19. los montanas, the only coconut gravy is from the Sayur Lodeh, but it is not rich, I know, since I use the light(less "fat") coconut milk. ;p . Yes, I know, usually there're rendang, curries to choose from in Nasi Padang, thus that "HOT" factor:D

  27. I am a happy boy today because I had beef curry for dinner. I have been craving curry all week and my friend called to invite me to dinner earlier this evening. We went to a Vietnamese restaurant (run by people who speak Cantonese) in Flushing, Queens. Everyone ordered "pho" noodles but I ordered beef curry over white rice. YUMMY!!!!

Now I can see your curry pictures without crawling up the wall. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  28. Hihi happy boy(a.k.a. ming merciless), was it Vnese curry? Now, Vnese curry, Japanese curry, Thai curry, Malaysian curry, Indonesian curry, S'pore curry...it does not matter to you any more, right?
But virtual curry can store forever(if server is not down), and served 24/7, with no expiry date(if blogger is not down)...heehee

  29. If my definition is correct :

Nasi Kerabu - originating somewhere in Kelantan where the rice is accompanied by lots of Malay veg salad.

Nasi Padang - originating from Sumatera (Padang?).

Nasi Kandar - originating probably from Penang and synonymous with the Indian Muslim communities. The rice is placed in a big pot and carried using a kandar stick across the shoulder. Historically used to serve the labourers. Lots of different curries. Whatever main dish you order, the chef will pour a bit of all the different curries onto your rice to give it a complex but superlicious curry taste!

Nasi Campur - donno where it originates but it is basically a stall which sells white rice with a wide variety of dishes to accompany it. Nasi Campur is sold by the Malay community. For chinese, they call it "chap fan" in Cantonese - which means mixed rice.

p/s : No research done for the answers above. Just my opinion :)

  30. pablopabla, thank you leh! You so busy still do this...pai seh....
The Nasi Kandar sounds really like those Hainanese Curry Rice ;p

  31. going for a local nasi padang right now....its in Lombok though so not from Sumatra tonight, but just as nice!!! Yes its all spicy hot but delicious, and for less than $1 a meal can't complain

    ReplyDelete
  32. nasi campur originated in Indonesia....not Malaysia, but who cares really. And yes you're correct, it means mix rice. So always different, usually its rice with the lot. For you Americans, its like a burger with the lot, opposed to a burger!!!
