Would you order a set with sides like these? Like myself, Lyrical Lemongrass has begedil with rice! Ok, this is my Nasi set with begedil meat potato patties, sayur lodeh vegetable curry, and coriander chicken. Now, I don't know if this is Nasi Padang, Nasi Campur or just Nasi XYZ ?
These are the recipes for the sides. Hope you will like them.
Sayur Lodeh, Vegetable Curry
Coriander Chicken
Begedil, Potato Meat Patties

Well, it's certainly not nasi kerabu which consists of rice and a lot of shredded fresh vegetables and herbs and kerisik (coconut). It could be nasi campur or nasi padang, but can't be sure. Nasi XYZ? Hahaha. Why not, eh?
ReplyDeleteOooh, it all looks so good when it's presented all together like that. Mmmm.
ReplyDeleteThe photos really look appetizing! I'll definitely have to try some of your recipes!
ReplyDeletewhatever it is, tigerfish, it just looks like the nasi they sell at the padang in Penang...Mmmh!
ReplyDeleteDid you cook all those food??? Or are they just pictures? Yumm, I am salivating right now.
ReplyDeleteWow. It looks so very authentic on the banana leaves. I love it. I often use banana leaves in the summer too. They add a little special something to a dish somehow.
ReplyDeleteDelicious!!!
Mae
Lyrical lemongrass, you also not sure? I also don't know! XYZ, it shall be! ;p
ReplyDeleteWandering Chopsticks, I learnt the presentation from those Nasi Padang stalls (in food courts) I used to frequent.
ReplyDeleteWokandSpoon, glad you like it. Try any of the recipes and let me know how is it for you. :)
the expedited writer, is that true ? Never had any Padang in Penang before, so I don't know. I guess the banana leaf did the trick for me ;p
ReplyDeletefirehorse, yes..I did the cooking :) I can't find any Nasi Campur or Padang in California, so I can't have pictures to post if I don't cook them myself. "Absence makes the heart grow fonder" and sure makes me work harder (in the kitchen).
ReplyDeleteHi Mae, yes! And especially if you bake something in those banana leaves, it is sooo...aromatic! It's almost summer temperature today, time to use thos banana leaves, ya?
ReplyDeletewow, Firehorse is here as well! :P ok, you lack the rich coconut milk gravy for such dishes.
ReplyDeleteNasi Padang is supposed to have been quite spicy (chilli hot).
I thought it was Indian, my bad.
ReplyDeletetigerfish,
ReplyDeleteI could lick the monitor! I'm on a diet and I can't stop coming to your blog everyday!
But hor.... maybe after I succeed in reducing my weight and am able to wear my new clothes, you would have to lick your monitor! muahahahaha..........
Hmmmm...... look like those "mixed vegi rice" from malay stall I had the other day at Lok Yang canteen. A little bit of everything. I'm feeling hungry again.
ReplyDeleteYummmy!!! I love spicy food and all the Nasi's which you have listed and then some more. This is probably the reason why I have to keep jogging so that I can still look fine despite being a glutton at heart.
ReplyDeleteBTW, are you now in Singapore or California?
tigerfish, everything looks so delicioius. I even want to get a serving of this , sit down somewhere and eat with my hands . Yum!
ReplyDeleteI love Nasi Kerabu, or actually anything Kerabu. Coz I love the smell of bunga kantan. (ginger flower)
ReplyDeletei think i shall call yours Nazi Tecz. sounds good ya. :-)
Nasi Padang River Valley, (opp Great World City) tried it or not? One of the best around. Have not gone there for a long time. Time to pop by. haha..
los montanas, the only coconut gravy is from the Sayur Lodeh, but it is not rich, I know, since I use the light(less "fat") coconut milk. ;p . Yes, I know, usually there're rendang, curries to choose from in Nasi Padang, thus that "HOT" factor:D
ReplyDeletekoeiru, indian is the briyani lah!Heeheee...
ReplyDeleteECL, how come u on diet? Aiyoyo....
ReplyDeleteBut this is one way to 磨练,磨练..haha
The "can see cannot eat" method!
fleck, something like that loh! I recall those Malay stall usually got curry veg, and begedil. In food courts, it's priced with that additional banana leaf :p
cool insider, in California loh! If in S'pore, I would have just gone eating out (so convenient) if I've wanted all these food...kekekke.
Currently no choice but to CIM (cook-it-myself)!
Veron, I wonder if I sat down somewhere here and eat the rice with my hands, how would pple look at me?:o But hamburgers also need to use hands right? Kekeke.
ReplyDeleteKeropok man, I never tried Nasi Kerabu before leh. S'pore got or not? Oi, you no good lah, name my dish "Nazi" something...alamak! Later I get caught how? :O
N'er tried Nasi Padang there before. Only tried the Nasi Padang at Rendezvous Nasi Padang(the old premise and which now, is the hotel).
keropok man: thanks for bringing up the nasi padang at GWC. There were/are actually 2 shops.. dunno which one is the better.
ReplyDeleteI will call it Nasi Melayu, easy mah. Hehehe.
ReplyDeleteAiyo, I see that you have become BSG's fan liao...aitelyu...their writing so colorful in real life very farnee oso...hehe...I must post a movie on my site...will make you laugh very hard. Hehehe.
Las Montanas, looks like the Nasi Padang at GWC really good. You also knew about it!
ReplyDeleteRM-this name better! Sounds rice-friendly :D tank-kew!
ReplyDeleteAy, quick quick post the movie leh! Make me so curious...about the "rainbow brothers"...LOL!
I am a happy boy today because I had beef curry for dinner. I have been craving curry all week and my friend called to invite me to dinner earlier this evening. We went to a Vietnamese restaurant (run by people who speak Cantonese) in Flushing, Queens. Everyone ordered "pho" noodles but I ordered beef curry over white rice. YUMMY!!!!
ReplyDeleteNow I can see your curry pictures without crawling up the wall. :-)
Hihi happy boy(a.k.a. ming merciless), was it Vnese curry? Now, Vnese curry, Japanese curry, Thai curry, Malaysian curry, Indonesian curry, S'pore curry...it does not matter to you any more, right?
ReplyDeleteBut virtual curry can store forever(if server is not down), and served 24/7, with no expiry date(if blogger is not down)...heehee
If my definition is correct :
ReplyDeleteNasi Kerabu - originating somewhere in Kelantan where the rice is accompanied by lots of Malay veg salad.
Nasi Padang - originating from Sumatera (Padang?).
Nasi Kandar - originating probably from Penang and synonymous with the Indian Muslim communities. The rice is placed in a big pot and carried using a kandar stick across the shoulder. Historically used to serve the labourers. Lots of different curries. Whatever main dish you order, the chef will pour a bit of all the different curries onto your rice to give it a complex but superlicious curry taste!
Nasi Campur - donno where it originates but it is basically a stall which sells white rice with a wide variety of dishes to accompany it. Nasi Campur is sold by the Malay community. For chinese, they call it "chap fan" in Cantonese - which means mixed rice.
p/s : No research done for the answers above. Just my opinion :)
pablopabla, thank you leh! You so busy still do this...pai seh....
ReplyDeleteThe Nasi Kandar sounds really like those Hainanese Curry Rice ;p
going for a local nasi padang right now....its in Lombok though so not from Sumatra tonight, but just as nice!!! Yes its all spicy hot but delicious, and for less than $1 a meal can't complain
ReplyDeletenasi campur originated in Indonesia....not Malaysia, but who cares really. And yes you're correct, it means mix rice. So always different, usually its rice with the lot. For you Americans, its like a burger with the lot, opposed to a burger!!!
