Rich glutinous smoothness.
Sweet (sometimes with hint of bitter) and creamy.
Pungently nice and aromatic.
Golden yellow custard color.
Hey, that's more like it.
It's Durian, da "King" of Fruits!
Well, rotten eggs or not - when it comes to durians, there's nothing like sitting on a fence. Either you like it or hate it. An acquired taste just like blue cheese and stinky tofu/beancurd (臭豆腐 ). I take durian and blue cheese, but have not developed any liking for stinky tofu/beancurd( 臭豆腐 ). Since it's that pungent, durians are usually not allowed in airports, subways, train stations etc. What we are able to get here are mostly "Monthong" or Golden Pillow(金枕头 ). In Thai, Mon means "pillow" and Thong means "Gold" . The Monthong is named for its fruit appearance. It is said to be shaped like a pillow while the delicious pulp is a golden yellow. The seeds are mostly aborted, thus they are more popular for export to other countries for durian-hungry (Asian) people like me, who are not in Singapore or Malaysia.
Now you need to tell me if this looks like a dead rat, alien from the show "Alien", or simply just durian masked by cheerios (to make you cheer when you smell durian) ?.... or something else...errr...the skeleton head that marks toxic ?

Durians ? Like or not?
$2.99/lb ? Cheap or not?
I heard there are so many types/varieties of durians in Malaysia and Singapore nowadays. Are D24 and XO already a breed of the past? I'm so behind durian fashion. Educate me...What's IN and what's HOT ?

ReplyDeletei dont know much about kind of durian as well, i just know it taste very goooood hahaha...
I remember the first time we checked into a hotel room in Malaysia and saw a sign in the room saying "no durian in room." I'd never been up close and personal with a durian, and didn't understand that sign at all. And then, a few days later, we tasted (and smelled) some durian from a street vendor, and hoo boy, then I knew why it wasn't allowed in hotel rooms!
ReplyDeleteYikes!
ReplyDeleteI meant to say, so glad you found your durian... enjoy? ;)
I LOOOOVVVEEE durian! hehe - the durian looks like a rat to me !
ReplyDeleteLOL! I think you are too free to dress up your durian to look like a mouse, cute though! LOL!
ReplyDeleteOh, over here it's selling $0.99/lb (frozen), so yours definitely expensive lah.
hhaha you made me LOL. :D those things are stinky. me no likey.
ReplyDeleteI've never had them, but I heard about their aroma.
ReplyDeleteWow ... you can get durians from where you are? Good for you! I learned how to eat durian when I was really young back in Hong Kong. Since then, I am hooked.
ReplyDeleteI love fresh durian. There's nothing like it. Sadly, the ones we get in the States are only pale imitations of the ones in Asia. *sniff*
ReplyDeleteOh yeah. The wife will only let me get durian if I cut and eat it in the driveway. Has to be on trash day too so the seeds and rind can to straight into the dumpster. =b
I've never eaten or seen it before... I am so intrigued by it though :)
ReplyDeleteHey, where did u get it? Is it frozen? haha u very free hor? Dressing up a durian!!
ReplyDeleteWhat a cute little durian! Hmm... I perfer sticky tofu more than durian and blue cheese. I remember when I was around 10, my mom said that I wasn't brave enough to try the sticky tofu, as it was just garlic and tofu only. SO, I tried it and since then, I hook on to it.
ReplyDeleteoh man..I am chinese but can't handle durians...sigh~
ReplyDeleteThe first time my husband went back to Singapore with me and saw a whole row of durian stalls at Toa Payoh Central, he practically ran far away from them! *lol* Durians are his enemies!
ReplyDeleteLOL!! I love that last shot which looks like a rat. So are so funny. :-) I love durians while I am eating it but I don't like the after effects, like the smell that lingers and burping durian breath. I prefer Thai durians. I don't buy it here although it is available because my partner would kill me if I brought it into the house ;-)
ReplyDeletecute durian!! since iam durian mania i could finish all in second ;)
ReplyDeleteOMG! Durian..... what a laugh!....you are so full of humour..... Durian always my friend....lol
ReplyDeletemmm...yummu. I saw some recently in the local Asian store here but didn't buy one because I don't know how to choose and also it would stink the house hahaha
ReplyDeleteI love durians, but really, you made it look quite inedible!! hahaha. Farny lar u.
ReplyDeleteToo many types of liulians nowadays. Just had two on Thursday. Shiokalingam!
ReplyDeleteWe went to a Chinese grocery store a couple of weeks ago and I swear you could smell the Durian all the way on the other side of the store! I am not brave enough to try it.
ReplyDeleteI love durian but haven't had it in almost 20 years. I do sometimes go to the Vietnamese restaurant in Chinatown and order the durian milkshake, made from imported frozen Thai durian pulp. It tastes almost as good as the real thing. :-)
ReplyDeleteYour little durian looks like a hedgehog.
I love durians! So glad you can find it in US!
ReplyDeleteThe latest faves in Singapore is Penang Pulau Balik durian and Mountain Cat (猫山王)Really shiok!
KM, I thought it looks more "evil" than a mouse. :O
ReplyDeletewandering chopsticks, I like durian ice-cream, durian puff, durian mousse cake, durians!
isha, sooooo expensive :O
lydia, hahahhah..the famous pungent smell! They say you can't keep any secret when you eat durians :P
east meets west, yep! But I still miss the "bitter" durians" ...
jackson, it has a "body" that look like a rat...I did not do it on purpose ;)
wokandspoon, did you eat any in this trip back to Malaysia?
litter corner, so cheap ah! You got buy and try or not? or you no like durians?
buddingcook, ok....you are in the other school. How does it smell like, to you? *curious*

wilfrid, wow....eating durians is an art! YOu need to learn it!
chubbypanda, I have to agree with you. I STILL LOVE fresh ones!!!! But too bad, I can only settle for alternatives now :(
Hahaha....did she make you brush your teeth and gargle ?
cynthia, try it if you have chance in future.
blur mommy, got it some a small Asian supermarket in the frozen section.
windy, I'm scared of stinky tofu! Smells terrible! :O
jason, woo hoo...you ARE missing out on something.
lin, hahhaha...I am soo intrigued by this fruit. Some of us(like me) can love it so much, yet there are some
who stays away from them like ....oh!
nora b, I know what you mean. I make sure I don't go out in the next 30mins after I eat durians at home since the after-effects linger for a while.
Haha!
lia, found another durian lover! yes!
big boys oven, our friend! A good friend! :D
the cooking ninja, was it fresh or frozen? Frozen ones don't need to choose. They look all the same in frozen package and is "odorless"
Heeeheee...fresh ones, I don't know how to choose too :P
lyrical lemongrass, it's only 2 harmless cheerios ok....:D
pablopabla, 2 pulps or 2 durians? :O
sara, was it frozen? It should be "odorless" when frozen. Try it, maybe?
ming, I think the imported frozen durian pulp is what I get from the Asian grocery. The milkshake is surely a "neater" way of consuming durians.
ECL, wah! 猫山王...sounds like Elvis Presley! LOL! What are the special characteristics of each "breed"?
we (means u also ) can always sit quietly in the park and pulp ourselves with it. Aroma pungent afterwards ok !
ReplyDeleteu must be a wicked Asian. but our choice is Cameron Highlands(Malaysia) Orang Asli durians , but must be opened personally by that asli girl
Hahaha I've never had durian before, but that last picture cracked me up. Even if it is super stinky, it's cute enough to eat. But yeah, it does kinda look like a dead rat or something :)
