Sardine burger - a pantry raid burger is a poorman's burger?

Leftover Tuesdays are back and this month, it's at Project Foodie. This suits me well - PANTRY RAID! I have a bad habit of buying what is NOT in the shopping list whenever I am in supermarket or grocery stores. So, you can always find "leftovers" in my pantry. The result of impulsive buying! :O ...they are mostly dried goods such as canned mushrooms, canned tuna, bottled sauces, dried pasta etc. etc.

This can of sardines has been sitting in my pantry for a while. And when I was thinking of what's for lunch one day, I decided to make something (in my opinion) different. Different, because I just had this OTHER ingredient that seem to match most closely to these sardines. Different, because other than this OTHER ingredient, I have nothing much left, even in the fridge. Alright, when the fridge is empty, I raid the pantry!

What's good about these sardines? I don't have to cook it, just need to warm it. LIGO sardines is the next alternative when I cannot find AYAM brand sardines around. No AYAM brand tuna I've seen around too. :( I prefer AYAM canned tuna to sardines.

Oh, this OTHER ingredient I was talking about...Muffins! English Muffins...or just another form of bread (am I right to say that?)

From the pictures, you can see how easy it is to assemble (cook, is not the word) my lunch.

Just lightly toast the muffin with the sardine in it, place a few sliced cucumbers in between and...

UMmmm... eat it like a fish burger!!! Isn't this exciting?

What would have been the first thought that goes through your mind when you see canned sardines? Aren't we thinking the same? Sardine sandwich! LOL! A burger because it's round. This "poorman's burger", definitely loses its luxury when compared to salmon burger, but it's easy to prepare - that's what in need when I'm hungry and I have nothing... except to do a pantry raid.

What would be the easiest yet most exciting and interesting dish you have made?

  1. Sardines aren't quite my thing but you make the burger look very appetising. You're lucky your impulse buys are generally canned. I often stack up on dairy and fruit which always go off. Not a good habit to have

  8. I too have the tendency to buy can food and stock up. The difference is that I don't usually stock up enough and when I am really hungry and desperate for food, I run out of can food!

I must say I love the photos you took. Definitely qualify for any commercial cookbook materials. Well done! I look at those pictures, and I feel darn hungry right now ... (30 mins after midnight) ... and I have no more can food left :(

  9. Yum yum. I bought a can the other day craving for sardines sandwiches like my mother used to make with some sliced red chillies but my husband ate them all.

This burger may be an idea for him.

  10. You make me want to go raid my pantry right now and make a sardine sandwich :) I took always pick up stuff that's not on my grocery list.

The most popular brand of sardines we get here is Brunswick and it is the only brand when I need a sardine fix. Here's a popular way we "make" sardines. :)

We'd always get the one in oil or soy oil. Pour all of it into a bowl - yes the juice/oil too. Cut up some hot chilies, green onions, a squeeze of lemon juice (we adjust for salt after adding the lemon juice), mash it all together and wha-lah! We mound the mixture between slices of bread, have it with roti or some people like to cook some white rice and eat it with a pickle. So good :)

  13. I grew on on sardine sqndwiches so your burger lloks great. Using English muffins is also an original idea. My mom usually mashes the sardine with sliced onions and chillies and with a dash of fresh lime juice (those tiny limes). yummm!!!

  18. There are limited choices of sardine here too. In SG/Msia, plenty of them to choose from, I prefer Yeo's or the brand with a flower (don't remember the name) and the Ayam brand would be 2nd choice. Here in Sydney, Ayam brand would be my 1st choice.

    I love sardines... :D
