Who said so ? The tamarind chicken (recipe, courtesy from Pablopabla) is so so good.
I never tasted such a dish before. The closest I have done is Baba Coriander Chicken. The ingredients are almost the same just that as the name of the dish speaks for itself, Ayam Sioh or Tamarind Chicken uses generous amount of tamarind whilst Baba Coriander Chicken uses salted soy beans , (a.k.a tau cheo, in hokkien) and lemongrass. The flavor of these two chicken dishes are completely different.
Anyhow, I followed the recipe to a T (used tamarind pulp to squeeze and extract the tamarind liquid), except I use the slow-cooker to slowly braise the chicken instead of frying. Still taste good. A very appetizing dish with rice.

What a tasty plate! I think tamarind is a funny word too.
ReplyDeletelooks like a very healthy meal to me :)
ReplyDeleteI love the flavors of tamarind and chicken together. I remember the first time I had it, years ago -- a friend made tamarind chicken wings for a New Year's Eve buffet. I couldn't stop eating them.
ReplyDeleteoooh look at that! i LOVE a runny egg over rice so much. so does my hubby his favorite is basil chicken with a runny egg. this looks deeelish!
ReplyDeleteGlad you tried it and found it tasty :)
ReplyDeleteAnd not forgetting, thanks for the mention too :D
the chicken looks abit funny..but well if u say its good..i wan to taste it man..
ReplyDeletewoah..first time I see the rice in this chicken rice dish nicely displayed in three pillars..keke..
ReplyDeletekelly, funny but it's tasty indeed :D
ReplyDeletethe expedited writer, you think so ?
lydia, tamarind is so good with chicken, even prawns and fish in spicy gravies. YUM.
aria, me too love runny egg with rice. Runny egg with bread/toast. Runny egg with noodles.
jackson, tamarind sounds quite crude (bad word)....doesn't it?
pablopabla,it's so simple and super-tasty. I even kept the leftover gravy to dip in loti!
Hojiak!
"joe", funny? Wrinkled? Took a second look and thought it looked "wrinkled"...
must be the slow-cooking process that "aged" it. LOL!
jason, hahahha....3 pillars can put an egg on top. Why not?
look so succulent.... must be a finger licking good situation.
ReplyDeleteLooks good, but only one tamarind chicken drumstick? LOL! Btw, what kind of rice is that?
ReplyDeleteLooks delicious! I haven't cooked with tamarind for a loooong time. The rice looks like my kind of rice. How did you make it? Is it wild rice?
ReplyDeleteLooks really healthy!! I love runny eggs too! :)
ReplyDeletehaha. when i repeat the words a few times, it did feel like a bad word. hhaahaha. n the rice looks like nasi dagang *miss it!* and the meal definitely look healthy =D
ReplyDeletelooking good tamarind chick. what is that rice?
ReplyDeleteThe idea of using a slow cooker is good. I don't really like frying. Too oily ... too unhealthy ya? Seriously I have no idea what Tamarind is. I don't know if I can get these Western ingredients in Singapore. But I will certainly try that one one day ... especially I do have a slow cooker.
ReplyDeleteLooks good, a balance diet on a plate!
ReplyDeletebig boys oven, bone licking good :P
ReplyDeleteeast meets west, I cooked 10 drumsticks for 2 pple!!! :)
Red cargo + white.
Nora B., nope, not wild rice. I usually mix white rice and red cargo.
blur mommy, me too! Runny eggs on toast, rice, noodles, like them all. :D
ironeaters, hey, you are the only one so far that agrees with me. I think "Tama" is the culprit, but
maybe only Chinese will understand :P
Oops, I don't know what is nasi dagang!? :O
Isha, looks like the rice stole the limelight of the chick :O
Poor chick is forsaken!
wilfrid, I still do frying but sometimes I am just lazy to even turn on the stove :O
Plus, I don't think I have a pan wide enough to fry 10 chicken drumsticks, with the possible tossing and turning I have to do while frying.
In this case, slow-cooker wins with just one-pot and a switch of the button :D
Hey hey, tamarind is not Western ingredient lah! NTUC, GIANT...they all sell Tamarind(Assam) in blocks.
Go to the spices and curry paste/powder aisle to take a look. You will surely find them.
little corner of mine, hee hee...quite balanced lah!
One plate settle everything loh!LOL!
