Game for game meat ? - Elk, buffalo, bison

Where was I during the Labor Day Weekend?

What was I eating ?

Elk meat is an attractive low fat food source, lower in fat than most meat and poultry products. For elk (ground, cooked and pan-broiled), this is what you get. By the way, I believe these "game" meat were from farm-raised buffalo and elk.

At the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar , we had to try Elk burger, for once.

Of course, there was the buffalo burger too. Both the elk and buffalo burgers(or meat) do not differ much in appearance but even for farm-raised meat - the elk definitely tasted more "game-ish" or gamey (野味太重了!) than typical "domesticated" meat. The buffalo meat was closer to beef, in taste.

I think this is the most extreme of exotic meat I can handle. What has been, or will be...your most extreme ?

When you travel, do you limit yourself to typical food fare, or how challenged are you to try something different?

  1. Hi Tigerfish, you already read my post about kangaroo meat. But I've also had crocodile. Deep fried, so it tasted ok, I can't even described it - like a cross between chicken & calamari. Anyway, anything deep-fried tastes good. LOL

  2. Alligator, in Louisiana -- not something I'm anxious to try again, but I was happy to try it once. Buffalo is getting much more common, even in the supermarket here. One of the best things about traveling is trying local foods.

  3. I will try, but usually only off someone else's plate.I have tried rabbit at the famous Vong in NYC, and it was delicious - just like chicken!

  4. I always try to get out of my comfort zone and eat something new, but when I was an expatriate, you could find me at Wendy's every Sunday. I just needed something like home.

  5. I have had cuy, or guinea pig. Its the national dish of Peru. Also, since I am doing my masters on camelid consumption, I figure I should eventually consume some llama meat. I am currently working on getting some llama steaks or charki (dried meat).

  6. I get elk all the time since my dad's a hunter. Kangaroo, crocodile, alligator, snake, whale.

    nora b: I tasted crocodile ribs deep fried at florida.....I would say the taste was rather unique, it does has a different smell.

  9. Ive had alligator, rattlesnake, ostrich, and the more usual squirrel, raccoon, venison, buffalo, etc.
    Are the burgers so huge because the animals are huge? ;-)
    Actually, I'm rather partial to a good beef steak...

    lydia, yes...now I even see ground buffalo in TJ. Need to make my own buffalo burger with it soon :)

    SAHM, I have not tried rabbit before because it looks cute to be eaten. But my hub kept telling me rabbits are pests, it's ok to eat them :O

    kelly, it's only once in a blue moon to try crazy stuff. Home-based comfort food is still DA BEST!

    retno, I don't think they are original. The thought of it sounds cruel to me :O

    big boys oven, yes they were. Surprisingly they were moist. I would expect it to be dry since they are leaner.

  11. I've had alligator and ostrich at La Fondue in Saratoga.

    When I travel, I like to eat whatever I'm craving, which is mostly aZn food heh. I gotta have my rice ya know? All joking aside, I do like to try weird things that the locals eat.

  12. The sad thing is that most farm-raised game meats are fed on the same unhealthy diet of corn mash and additives that farm-raised cattle are. While game meat has less fat than beef, farm-raised game meat is still far fattier than grass-fed game.

    Tip for all, buy your meat free-range and grass-fed whenever possible.
