Tomatoes medley that made me mad

I got medley of tomatoes from Trader Joes, and found them sooooo cute. Not only they are mini - small like cherry and grape tomatoes, they come in these funny shapes too! Almost like mini papayas.

Do you like tomatoes (am I asking the obvious)? Roma, cherry, grape, beef steak or ...?
Do you know tomatoes should be cooked in order to release as much lycopene as possible?

  1. I had no idea that tomatoes are better (or healthier) when cooked! I've missed you Teczcape! I am just catching up with all of your posts, and lemme tell ya, I am keeping real busy! (I just got hi-speed internet in my new place.)

  3. I read the title and was thinking, what did the poor tomatoes do to make you so angry? Then I realized you meant you were crazy about them. I love tomatoes too. :) Last year I planted 10 plants, but didn't even harvest that many tomatoes. The caterpillars ate them all. I had caterpillars the size of my fingers, they ate through half of a full-sized tomato!

  4. This year at my farmers' market I've been seeing all sorts of mini heirloom tomatoes -- green zebras, "black" tomatoes -- I buy them by the quart, put them all into a large bowl on my kitchen counter, and grab a couple every time I walk by. I don't even bother to cook them -- just eat them like candy!

  5. I watch 'Jamie at Home' recently and he talked about how to grow and cook tomatoes at one point. I was amazed how many different kind of tomatoes! I find that tomato is a handy veg as you could make sauce out of it, for example. Also, it would increase the natural defence against UV rays... good stuff! :)

  6. so cute! The shape and colours reminded me of the Thai dessert/sweets that is shaped like mini fruits. I don't know the name. It has some sort of bean paste inside.

  14. we never like tomatos cooked but once in Moscow we had a stunning dish of only cut tomatos sweetly served by cino-russo ladies in swanky tomato-colored skirts. so ya for once we got lyco??? but isn't tomatos stolen by the english from china and replanted up north ? and then become their national vege?

  17. All I can think of doing with such perfect little jewels are rolling them in some spiced salt and popping them into my mouth OR, I've seen a recipe from Rasa Malaysia where you can wrap them in bacon and grill them! Oh, can you imagine the smokey-ness from the grill, the salt and flavour from the bacon, the juciness of the tomatoes and the sweet or ever so slight tartness of the tomatoes all coming togeter in each bite? :D

  18. passionate eater, welcome back!!!!! :D
Tomatoes are good eaten as-is too, just that if you want lycopene from tomatoes, they have to be cooked!

lia, they are so many different tomatoes here. I just saw a giant yesterday :O

wandering chopsticks, hahhahaha....medley and mad suppose to rhyme!...ahahhaha! Now I know why the tomatoes in the grocery stores have holes in them!
    I know you love them - I remember your 10lbs purchase :D

lydia, I saw giant heirloom as well. I've tried the green zebra (thks for telling me the names), love them!

windy, didn't know about the UV defense thingy, I learnt something new today:D

nora b., I know what you are talking about. Yes...those desserts that have tau sar in it.
It's like ang ku kueh - fruit-shaped! LOL!

    ECL, really or not?

east meets west, or did you train them to separate and divide like in those TV pgms where the master ask the disciple to separate green beans and red beans? :P

    valentina, me too!

ironeaters, I agree. Some raw tomatoes feels funny but the mini ones are usually ok.

    mandy, what kind ?

wilfrid, hmmm...I don't think as much variety in S'pore. But I don't know about the gourmet stores. They may have.
Here, these tomatoes are quite easily available :) ....
Yep, the longer you cook tomatoes, the cells are broken down to lycopene.

andaliman, raw tomatoes and sambal - NEw to me! :O

team bsg, means you don't take tomato ketchup too lah! In some way, they are cooked tomatoes too...hahhah! Anyway, quite easy to make you all eat the food you no like hor! :P
Me not so sure about national vege but I think some tomatoes may have been re-engineered too much to give special shape and color.
Heirloom tomatoes are better - seeds preserved from generations and generation. :)

little corner, just what I did :)

RM, yep...I thought of hulu too but dunno the actual english word for that...so I thought of papaya instead. Well, at least the color is more papaya-ish!LOL!

cynthia, yup! I can imagine but I was not patient enough to wait for that to happen. So I just popped them straight :O
