Most of you who follow my blog should have noticed that I seldom cook deep-fried dishes. Simply, I hate the aftermath. It's such a chore to wash up the greasy wok and clean up all the oil splatters around the stove top and on the kitchen floor. A deep fryer could have solved all the problems. I could have fried chicken, french fries, deep fried croquettes, cheese balls with the press of one (or a few?) button. A deep fryer is something that we would not use everyday (can't have deep-fried food everyday!) but definitely a nice-to-have. Yes ?
I was once, almost on the "cheapo" verge of getting myself a USD9.90 deep fryer. And for once, procrastination done me good. The "science" in me was telling me then, that I won't get a good quality deep fryer with just 10bucks. For example, the liner wall of the frying unit may be made of inferior material that may morph into some other harmful compounds if under high temperature (just like how Teflon coating degrades under high temperature - never use a non-stick pan for high temperature cooking!), a temperture control/thermostat that may fail in just 10 days, etc. At least, these deep fryer reviews are telling me no one uses a cheapo deep fryer for less than 10 bucks.
Do you own a deep-fryer ? How much did you pay for it?
I don't own a deep fryer. I did contemplated to have one (especially after the Australia trip and I fell in love with fish and chip). But I don't think I can afford the oil ... lol ... So much!
ReplyDeletethe only deep fryer i have is the one handed down to my fiance by his mother. It's old but it's from a good brand and it's still VERY hardy and new. I don't use it, i prefer just frying in a pot lol. If you want I can send it to you free but S&H is on you :P
ReplyDeleteI love fried foods but don't have a deep fryer either. Like you I seldom cook deep-fried stuff because I'm too lazy to clean up later - but maybe that's a good thing for the spare tire around my waist!
ReplyDeleteI don't own one, and it's a good excuse to not make deep-fried foods!
ReplyDeleteIt seems like, for me, it would waste a lot of oil - I wouldn't it often enough before it went off!
I have never tried deep frying for the same reasons that you mention. I either avoid deep fried dishes or shallow fry them instead.
ReplyDeletewilfrid, oh ye...waste too much oil, I know. Tt's why I don't do it too.
ReplyDeletethe expedited writer, thanks for the offer but I can't afford the oil!!!
Buahahah....
wokandspoon, sure it's a good thing. I just have my fried food outside.
katiez, hahhaha...true.
kevin, I do shallow frying too, often if I want some crisp effect. oven works as well. Too bad I dont have an oven now.
I have a philips deep fryer which cost about S$70, I think.
ReplyDeleteI think the minimum a deep fryer should have is a detachable pan so that u can clean it after the deep frying. I noticed that the cheapest models only have built-in frying pan, and the inability to clean it thoroughly after using is quite a turn-off
And those that comes with a oil filter container is good too so that u can save the oil for later ;p
