Popiah - Vegetables wrapped in wheat-flour crepe



Mom's popiah. Can you spot a fried one among the rest ?

In Singapore, we call it 薄饼 (po bing) whereas in Taiwan, they call it 潤餅 (roon bing) They mean the same thing - fresh spring roll. The popiah skin is a thin paper-like crepe or pancake made from wheat flour. Sweet sauce and chili is spread on the "crepe", then layer a lettuce leave on the crepe and up goes the fillings (on the lettuce - that is what I will do) which is mainly finely grated stir-fried jicama(turnips), French beans, carrots. Before wrapping and rolling it up, you garnish the fillings with bean sprouts, sometimes crushed peanuts.

Now, roll it up and eat! :D

  8. Oh, I like these fresh spring rolls. I used to enjoy a vegetarian lumpia with lots of tofu, carrots, cabbage, and they had a sweet, sticky sauce on top.

  15. And we call it lumpia, either fried like the top one on the left, or fresh like the rest. We serve it with vinegar and crushed garlic or peanut sauce.

  21. This type of popiah is my fave *shows unsightly drooling face* is the fried one 4 u? hehe ... it seems that no matter which food u feature, I will get a craving for that food :p

    You know what, I couldn't find popiah skin in montreal before, i kept looking high and low but i've finally found some under the guise of "fresh spring roll skin"! Got to wrap some popiahs for myself with the left over pie tee filling hehe... ;)

  27. OMG, I love po piah. The ones at the Malaysian restaurants in NYC never taste as good as the one my mom used to make when I was a kid.

    I could eat them for breakfast, lunch and dinner. But I prefer the ones with the sweet sauce (hoisin sauce?) inside.

  28. I don't like popiah cos I don't like turnip. But i found chiang mai has got the best popiah cater to my tastebud. Hehe..no turnip of course but lots of shredded cucumbers, shredded omelets and sausages. Yummy!
