Homemade mango chutney. Homegrown alfalfa. Fish. Little mystery gift.

Me: I wish I had a 3888 sq ft backyard.
The "Devil" in Me: Hey, you do not need a backyard to do this.

Me: I wish I had a small patio or balcony.
The "Devil" in Me: Again, you do not need these to grow this.

Me: Ok. Can't I just dream and wish? Give me a pot!
The "Devil" in Me: A jar or any recycled "wide-mouth" "see-through" bottle will do.

Legume growing process...

In 6 days, my Alfalfa sprouted beautifully...



High protein content and highly digestible fiber sprouts, Alfalfa Sprouts must be one of the easiest plant to grow: I don't even need soil. Oh well, an elementary (or even a pre-school) kid may already know this. But for once, without any space to grow fruits and vegetables/herbs, I could grow something and bring it to the dinner table. A first for me. Alfalfa Sprouts tend to smell and taste like "grass" (raw taste) - like bean sprouts. In a garnish of teeny weeny bit, it is acceptable for me. I am sending Alfalfa (a family of legumes) to Ruchikacooks for My Legume Love Affair 22.

Pan-seared salt-and-pepper fish fillet, topped with homemade mango chutney (recipe will be available soon) and homegrown alfalfa sprouts.


The mango chutney recipe can be found in my new cookbook. Can you imagine cooking chutney in the rice cooker? And I must be enjoying mangoes with fish a lot. I like mango salsa on salmon cakes and mango salsa on pan-fried halibut. How about you?

    True, these sprouts need just a jar to grow but they are not going to say no if the jar is going to be placed on a nice patio ;)

  8. It sounds like a trick question! ;) I like fish all sorts of different ways, Fried whole fish is always good. For that, I usually like eating it a soy sauce-calamansi sauce. Of course, how can one go wrong with the Cantonese-style steamed fish? For a very meaty fish like halibut (which I love), I think just a pan-fry or grill is good enough; i don't think I even need a sauce to go with it. Fish is good in all sorts of ways. ;D

  11. I found your blog when I was searching for how to cook (non-rice) in a rice cooker! It's a gem! Looking forward to your book. I've never steamed fish before, and steamed it for the first time in a rice cooker, with veggies and tofu. LOVE. love love.

    and good on u for being patient with the plants. I am sooo impatient when it comes to gardening.

    My favourite way of eating fish will be Katsu Fish with good lashing of Jap curry! Oh oh, and of course, my grandma's steamed pomfet with ginger and mushrooms!

  18. I once wished for enough land to build a garden. I wanted it and I got it.
    Ten acres of land. Land I haven't touched in 15 years. Instead, I decided to plant herbs and tomatoes...in pots, right next to the house. A lot less overwhelming for an amateur gardener like me.

    In any case, I'll have to try making my own alfalfa sprouts. Your wonderful photos convinced me.

    My choice would be the yogurt and chili marinated grilled fish(with a hint of lemon), almost like a kebab, served with pilaf!

    Do let me know when the book is out, I would love to write about it/introduce it my readers too, as I use pressure cooker/rice cooker a lot!

  23. Your sprouts are lovely! Do you grow any other kind of sprouts?

    I like to grill my fish with a simple Mojo marinade if it's a fatty fish. If i can't grill I use my stoneware pans to bake them. My daughter loves salmon with rice and no sauce, so that's the way we have it!

    We share the same liking on how we like fish (whole vs fillet) to each cooking style.

    sweetlife, try growing them, it is really easy. You do need to "shower" them with water for each day for 6 days though.

    Regarding your fish question - I've actually been smoking some salmon lately and I added a bit of blue cheese to it - very tasty, but I really have no specific way I like fish more than another - I am constantly amazed at its diversity.

  37. I can't believe sprouts grow so quickly! They look so fresh and delicious atop your mango chutney and fish!

    My favorite fish is baked with a coconut/almond crust and then made into a taco with a spicy coleslaw and pico de gallo sauce.

    I love deep fried whole fish but I also like blackened fish. Oh I can't decide.... cause steamed fish and grilled fish (ikan pepes) are my favorite as well :-)

    That mango chutney looks fab. I'll be waiting for your recipe...

    I think my two favorite ways of eating fish are:
    1) Marinading with mirin, soy and sugar, then baking in the oven (i.e. salmon teriyaki)
    2) My friend's recipe of marinading with ginger, garlic and lime, covering with spring onions and raisins, then baking in filo paper and serving with thai sweet chili sauce. Yum!

  41. I like my fish steamed simply, Chinese style, with just some julienned young ginger and a dash of sesame oil. Eaten with rice and its cooked juices = Perfection. :D

  42. At home we *always* grill fish, and to me that is honestly the best. But now that I am away and with no grill to call my own, steaming is my favorite option. Add a little minced ginger, sesame oil, chili peppers and scallions and you have something beautiful.
