Biotech food - Thought of the day

Thought of the day.

I picked this article up at The New York Times this morning and wanted to share it with you. I was disturbed...would I be eating a big Atlantic salmon in the future, knowing that it has been genetically engineered to grow at twice the rate of normal salmon ? If you are interested in the "serious" side of food, go have a read. I know genetically modified food is here to stay - rice, corns, and soy bean are very common genetically modified food. But do we need more of them ?

"Enviropigs" with cleaner manure and healthier meat, do we really need them?

  1. The idea of genetically altered food scares me, but I know it's been going on in various forms for longer than we know. I wonder if we can even separate out what's not genetically engineered anymore.

  2. I don't like the way food is been altered and invented these days. Did you know that the FDA approved meat from clones? Read http://www.democracyinaction.org/dia/organizationsORG/oca/campaign.jsp?campaign_KEY=6433. Quite disturbing!

  5. since we are on this scientific heavy subject , should be interesting when all foods become genetically enhanced for our enhanced lifestyles ( what say u ? ) come to think of it being natural is so unatural right ?

  6. I'm not really suprise about it, but just make me sad. It may mean that we have to pay more to get the 'normal' food while it's would be cheaper to get those modify non-sense! *sigh*

  7. I don't like genetically modified food either and try to avoid it but it's very difficult! Who knows where ingredients come from anymore! We're all going to grow 3 boobs instead of 2 soon! At least my husband will be happy ;-)

  8. That is literally food for thought. Even us vegetarians have to think about the impact GMO meat will have on the environment, not to mention GMO produce!

  9. I think most that we consume these days are not natural anymore (hmmm ... great novel materials on what the future will be). Long time ago, scientists modify the genes of plants. The milk that we drink is fortified with all the added chemicals. And the chickens are not the natural ones anymore.

    Call this human progress?

  10. Genetically engineered fish? No way. Farmed fish? Absolutely. I wish these companies would stop trying to force things to grow larger in less time. I am so sensitive to this stuff, and had no idea about it. Now I buy only hormone and antibiotic free meats, something that is still considered a luxury for most, but for me it is a necessity. When I eat that other meat, I am an emotional basket case.

But then, when has the FDA actually cared about people.

  12. kelly, I don't think we can separate out what's GM and what's not, unless we write a thesis about this topic ;p

east meets west, sigh.....so scary right? I wonder if there is a "conspiracy" out there...make people more sick, then increase the medical insurance (make us NEED and USE it!) :O

ironeaters, I don't even dare to think about the food in future. Just hope we will not be eating "robots". :O

ECL, you get everything including a shorter life? Would you want it? :p

  14. team bsg, OMG! Durians that look like bananas? Pork with Vitamin C!?

windy, I sought of agree with what you just said. Aren't we paying more for normal natural food now? Those
chickens or cows that are not treated witha antibiotics to "simulate" better eggs, and milk are much more expensive than those "given medication"?
    *sigh, sigh, sigh*

wokandspoon, ahhahaha...you are too funny, my dear! I will "negotiate" for a higher spending budget from my hubby to shop for "natural" ingredients- then
reason being - the resultant will make them happy! LOL!

anonymous, yep, this thought just serves to keep us aware. It's hard to avoid sometimes. But if we are not aware, it's worse.

wilfrid, oh yes, tt's why should eat more "kampung" chicken that has not been fed weird food and given medicated injects! :O
Human progress? - technology evil, you mean? *sigh*

diane, I also try to buy hormone and antibiotic free chicken these days. Oh yes, we have to take care of ourselves because if we fall, nobody will take care of us.

steamy, so sad! Just means I need to spend more time in the grocery stores in future. Coz I need to read every single label on the package carefully.

    nate 2.0, I don't know!!!!! :O

    little corner of mine, sigh...
