Brussel sprouts recipes + teenage mutant weirdo cabbage - WS

Brussel Sprouts -

Well, are these brussel sprouts ? Have you seen brussel sprouts looking like this ?

I cannot believe they (in Taiwan) are selling these overly-grown brussel sprouts! Or should I say teenage mutant weirdo cabbage ? Well, it was labeled in Mandarin (I don't know what is brussel sprouts in Mandarin) but my eyes could not be deceived. Time to educate those farmers! They should know when to harvest their crops! Or is it me who is ignorant ?

Shouldn't brussel sprouts be looking like these -

There are two simple recipes for me, when it comes to brussel spouts - Chinese or Western style!

Steamed brussel sprouts (Chinese style)
Ingredients:
-brussel sprouts, washed (for bigger "sprouts", cut a cross, 1/4 deep at the bottom of the "sprouts" so that it cooks faster during steaming)
-oyster sauce, to taste

Method:
1.Steam the brussel sprouts for 10 mins
2.Prepare oyster sauce; and toss the steamed sprouts in the sauce

Steamed brussel sprouts (Western style)
Ingredients:
-brussel sprouts, washed (for bigger "sprouts", cut a cross, 1/4 deep at the bottom of the "sprouts" so that it cooks faster during steaming)
-butter
-salt and pepper

Method:
1.Steam the brussel sprouts for 10 mins
2.Place steamed sprouts in big bowl, top with some butter, and sprinkle salt and pepper, to taste. Toss it up !

Chinese style is simply with oyster sauce, and western style - with butter, salt and black pepper (add some bacon if you have)

Gosh!! Those are huge!!!!
I guess instead of cooking a packet of "normal" sprouts you can cook just one of those huge ones :P
But I think it's weird..lol!

You saved yourself some $ not attending the IT show PLUS not getting yourself squashed!! :P

Have not seen those scary big Brussels sprouts -- did you try them? I guess you'd cook more like cabbage than the traditional Brussels sprouts recipes? Weird....

I like your shots and I've never seen monster brussel sprouts either. The ones we get where I live in the U.S. are very small.

They do look rather overgrown! I just did a brussel sprouts stir fry last week, I should post it soon :) Btw, are they called 菜胆 in Mandarin (or something like that, I might have gotten the characters wrong heh)?

I love sprouts! They seem to be a loved or hated veggie. They are delicious and they are a beautiful green when they are cooked.

My family loves brussel sprouts. It is only available here near Christmas (from Oct/Nov on).

The overgrown sprouts must be very bitter?

Little Corner of Mine said... [Reply]

Yes, the Chinese brussel sprout is bigger and longer like you posted. I like the chinese type too, more leafy and less hard. You should try bake brussel sprout when you have an oven, very easy, just mixed them with olive oil and season with salt and pepper and bake at 450'F for 20-30 mins.

I live in an Irish American neighborhood so there is a lot of brussel sprouts on the menu here.

First of all they are not brussel sprout. They are the second crop that grow after the first crop : cabbage has been harvested.

You should try them, they are delicious sauteed with lots of garlic, white pepper & fish sauce.

cheers.
