Pineapple Shrimps/ Prawns

Fresh whole shrimps/prawns (heads and shells on) are most flavorful when cooked in a dish; but when time is not on our side, peeled deveined frozen version brings the convenience one would wish for without much sacrifice to the flavors.

Bring in another convenient ingredient - a good quality free-of-preservatives store-bought sauce, and a delicious shrimps/prawns stir-fry is less than 30 minutes away.

Certain fruits (and its natural juices) bring tangy-sweet acid brightness to a dish. Not all fruits are created equal. For example, stone fruits e.g. peaches and nectarines tend to be on the sweet-side while kiwi on the tangy-side. Pineapple, to my preference, is one of those tangy-sweet candidates that makes a dish more mouthwatering, and tantalizing such as Mixed Vegetables and Pineapple Curry, Tofu, Pineapple, Bell Peppers Stir-Fry and Sweet and Tangy Tofu.

Shrimps, Eggs, Tomatoes, Broccoli Bowl

Shrimp bowl is one of my favorite bowls to make because it's quick, easy and delicious. Quick because it takes much shorter time to cook shrimps than chicken or fish. Easy because it just needs basics like salt and pepper to bring out its flavors. Delicious because IT JUST IS.

If you also enjoy shrimp bowls (be it shrimp grain bowls, shrimp veggie bowls), I hope you can find some quick inspiration.

Do you currently own an air-fryer? I do not and still using conventional oven or sometimes toaster oven to do all the baking, roasting and grilling.

While cooking the shrimps in the oven, make sheet-pan eggs or ramekin eggs at the same time in the same oven.

Jalapeno Shrimps Sausage Veggies Bowl

This Jalapeno Shrimps and Sausage Veggies Bowl is a flavor-packed one-dish meal that you can happily enjoy any month of the year. Healthily loaded with garlic steamed vegetables, topped with delicious oven-roasted shrimps and breakfast sausages.

Cooking the shrimps, sausages, and jalapeno altogether on a sheet-pan in the oven is one of the easiest fuss-free cooking prep.; at the same time, the ingredients flavor up one another so you actually do not have to depend on any other seasoning/marinade.

Oven-Baked Shrimps Protein Bowl

Shell-on, shell-off, head or headless, we enjoy all of them. Shrimps!

Shrimps Salad Bowls are less common in salad shops; even there is, it's at a premium, sometimes even more expensive than salmon bowls. So it's best to prepare Shrimps Protein Bowl at home.

I have made shrimp bowls many times but each time, the bowl turn out different (yet always delicious!) because the shrimps are sometimes seasoned differently and vegetables are also changed out depending on seasons and availability.

One-Pot Shrimp Quinoa

Swap out multi-grains in this One-Pot Shrimp Rice for quinoa; and make Duck & Shrimp Quinoa, Veggie Bowl similar to this Duck Protein Bowl, just better.

Shrimp Bowl with Spicy Water Spinach/Kang Kong

Tuck into this easy delicious Argentine red shrimp bowl with bonus add-on spicy water spinach (also known as kang kong).

If you are wondering why the egg is in such an "unnatural" shape, check out this quick Sheet Pan Egg recipe. While doing that, don't miss out other busy weeknight shrimp bowl recipes (e.g. Salsa Jalapeno Shrimp Bowl).

Oven-Roasted Gulf Shrimps Veggies Bowl

Oven-Roasted Shrimps Veggie Bowl again because this is one of the easiest no-fuss delicious low-carb bowl-meal to prepare, zero to hero, in less than 30 minutes

Salsa Red Sauce Jalapeno Shrimps

There were no fresh tomatoes or canned tomatoes in the kitchen to make Tomato Shrimps; and that leftover store-bought salsa in the jar was just too little for dipping that entire bag of tortilla chips.

Luckily, what's "little" and remaining is perfect as "bottom-of-the-jar salsa" to marinate/season these shrimps to make Salsa Red Sauce Jalapeno Shrimps.

One-Pot Shrimp Rice Multigrains

This quick-cook blend of seven grains (farro, barley, wheat berries, buckwheat, red rice, black rice, oats) cooks in about 10 minutes. Shrimps, typically, take approximately the same time to cook, why not put shrimps (protein) and multigrain rice (carbs) together as one-pot/rice-cooker Shrimps Rice/Multi-grains? Isn't it more wonderful when the rice is infused with savory shrimp flavors while the shrimps cooks in (and with) the rice.

Other one-pot possibilities include One-Pot Tomato Rice, One-Pot Turmeric-Spiced Rice, Cabbage Rice.

Oven-Baked Jamaican Jerk Shrimps/ Prawns

What we know as prawns in Asia are sometimes labeled shrimps in the United States. Some of us think that prawns are the big guys while shrimps are the small tiny ones but that might not be the correct classification. Prawns and shrimps are actually different species.

Fresh local spot prawns

For example. the Ridgeback Shrimps featured here (Steamed Ridgeback with Ginger & Scallions) are true prawns, while the Spot Prawns in the recipe today, are technically shrimps.

It does not matter which is what, and what is which as I enjoy both prawns and shrimps. It is actually not easy to get fresh local catch here. Most of the prawns/shrimps sold here are imported from Asia, and comes frozen. Sad.  Once in a while, we have fresh local catches such as Ridgeback or Spot but the season is short.

Sometime ago, I got these fresh local spot prawns from The Neves Portugese Seafood Market. My favorite method to cook fresh prawns/shrimps is (and always will be) - steaming. For experimental-purpose, I did it differently this time with this quick and easy oven-baked/grill recipe. You can also try this Oven-Baked Spanish-Style Shrimp recipe?

The key to fresh prawns/shrimps is to treat them simply, no fancy-schmancy - cooking method and seasoning, the same. Keep it simple.

Tomato Shrimps with Avocado & Quinoa Bowl

Making your own marinara sauce from scratch is not difficult. But when you are pressed for time, even 15 minutes is a lot of time. Store-bought marinara sauce makes meal preparation easier and reduces cooking time as there is no need to prep. the onions, garlic, tomatoes; and it is not necessary to wait for the ingredients to cook down over the stove.

Pasta marinara sauce is not only good for pasta, it is also quite handy as "seasoning" sauce. For example, simply think shrimps and vegetables stir-fry with tomato-based "seasoning sauce" .  Oh, isn't that sweet and sour shrimps? Quite close.

Sweet and soup or tomato-sauce shrimps is the protein feature of the grain bowl today. With store-bought marinara sauce, these delicious tomato-sauce shrimps can be prepared in less than 20 minutes.

Avocado, Shrimps, Tofu, Veggies Pasta Bowl

This pasta bowl has no sauce, and it is not missing any.

The garlic-cilantro oven-roasted shrimps, and the roasted zucchini and bell peppers  (alike Oven-Style Ratatouille and Vegetable Tian) are all good components of flavors to the pasta. Add in buttery avocado and roasted tofu to make it a balanced meal of complex carbs, lean protein, healthy fats and vegetables's healthy fiber, vitamins and essential minerals.

Seafood in a Bag En-papillote

Foil-packet meals are a lazy cook's best friend. En-papillote (French for "in parchment") may sound fancy but this method of cooking is actually a fuss-free and mess-free way to incorporate (lots of) vegetables with protein in a single dish. Though you can't physically see the ingredients being cooked (unlike "eyeballing" stove-top cooking), the secret sealed chamber traps moisture and flavors to ensure steamy deliciousness -  guaranteed almost every time!

There is a "parchment cooking" label created in my website just because this cooking method has a special place in my heart. Look at these easy foil-packet recipes such as En-Papillote Herb-Roasted Trout, En-Papillote Chicken and Asparagus, En-Papillote Salmon, Zucchini and Carrots and these vegetarian-friendly Vegetables and Mushrooms Packets and Zucchini, Bell Peppers Angel Hair Aglio e Olio. Some are easy side-dishes while others make perfect one-dish meals.

Today, this Seafood in a Bag shows the versatility of parchment-cooking yet again. By combining a mixture of fresh seafood - clams, wild local shrimps and sustainable-farmed tilapia fillets with garlic, tomatoes, dried herbs in a foil packet, this irresistibly delicious seafood dish is created in less than 30 minutes.

Veggie Salad, Avocado and Shrimp Bowl 蔬菜虾仁主食沙拉

This "golden" salad dressingis now the "liquid gold" in my kitchen, especially in my homemade salads and workout meals (e.g. Asparagus, Chicken and Potato Salad Meal, Mushrooms, Green Beans, Broccoli Salad Bowl) It is an easy and healthy upgrade from the basic extra-virgin olive oil-apple cider vinegar-garlic-salt-pepper vinaigrette-based dressing.

The gold? Turmeric.

Did you know that black pepper and turmeric is a perfect match which defies the good'ol equation of one plus one equals two? According to some research sources, piperine - the active compound in black pepper will increase and enhance the bio-availability of curcumin (active component in turmeric) hence boost curcumin absorption in the body.

Sometimes, I simply forget but whenever possible, I try to add turmeric in my cooking e.g. when cooking rice, and when preparing salad dressing.

If you enjoy these salad meals, or veggie grain bowls, do check them out here. Or if you prefer a shrimp-similar salad bowl, try this Mixed Veggies, Shrimps, Avocado and Radish Bowl.

Shrimps, Avocado, Radish, Mixed Vegetables Salad 烤虾蔬菜沙拉

This Farmers' Market Salad is made with organic salad vegetables, watermelon radish, sweet peppers - all from the farmers' market.

Piled below the grilled/roasted shrimps, eggs and avocado is a fresh mix of salad vegetables - organic heirloom red spinach, red dandelions, baby kale and lettuces.

From the farmers' market

Lately, I enjoy salads that can be partially prepared in advance e.g. radish and sweet peppers are prepared and sliced, set aside; eggs already hard-boiled (part of routine meal preparation).

Come meal-time, roast/grill the shrimps for a healthy, delicious and nutritious salad bowl meal e.g. Asparagus, Cauliflower, Quinoa Bowl, that can be assembled very quickly.

Shrimp /Prawn Masala Curry 马萨拉咖喱虾

Till I get myself some garam masala - typically a spice mix of turmeric, cinnamon, cloves, cumin; I am going to substitute garam masala with curry powder in this dish.

This Shrimp Masala is a very easy recipe if you have the basic Indian spices in your kitchen pantry. Curry-in-a-hurry or curry quick-fix as the name suggests, a curry that you can put together in less than 30 minutes (excluding marinade time). You can jolly well skip an hour of marinating time and still, the dish will not fail you.

Shrimps and Bell Peppers Stir-Fry 虾炒灯笼椒

It is not easy to get fresh USA-farmed shrimps here in California. I wonder if  they are seasonal. Most of the whole head-on shrimps are imported - e.g. from India, Vietnam, Ecuador; and are avoided due to the unknown unregulated farming practices. Frozen uncooked peeled shrimps, on the other hand are mostly from Thailand or Vietnam - are also avoided for similar reasons.

So I wonder what choices are we left with? Once in a while, wild-caught spot prawns or ridgeback prawns are available (very fresh, "live" in the tank) in the Asian supermarket, and I will not miss the chance for getting the freshest seafood for steaming. The next alternative is the frozen Key West shrimps that I will get from Whole Foods Market. Most recently, I also tried the frozen wild-caught Argentina red shrimps from Trader Joes.

Shrimps cook very quickly. If you are looking for a quick and easy yet delicious stir-fry that balances proteins and vegetables, try this Shrimps and Bell Peppers Stir-Fry. The brininess of shrimps balances very well with sweet bell peppers. Pair it with steamed rice and you have a well-balanced dinner plate.
