Tinned Fish Sardines Protein Bowl

Are you a fan of tinned fish? I am.

And I am so ready to stock them up this month, on Prime Day happening 6-7 October 2026, with exciting exclusive deals with Amazon Prime.

Tinned sardines, mackerel, trout, tuna (just to name a few) are convenient sources of protein and omega-3 fatty acids.

Ready to consume straight from the tin, you do not even have to cook it if short of time (workout snacks, anyone?).

But if you prefer, it is also easy and fuss-free to roast/bake them in the oven with some ground spices e.g. curry powder and dried herbs.

My favorite go-to protein salad bowls can be easily done in minutes. Salad greens below then topped with tinned fish or steamed vegetables topped with tinned fish.

My pantry stocks the most tinned/canned sardines - which also happens to be my favorite tinned fish. If it is canned tuna, tinned albacore tuna usually my go-to (smaller fish lower in mercury contamination). Both albacore and yellowfin are excellent lean protein choices.

Tinned mackerel is also nutritious and healthy  but compared to sardines and tuna, tinned mackerel is not always available in the grocery store or supermarkets.

Fortunately, with Amazon, it's now easier to get any variety of tinned fish, including tinned mackerel. It's more budget-friendly to buy tinned fish in bulk and they keep well in the pantry cabinet for some time. As Prime Day (6-7 October 2026) is just days away, make use of this chance to snatch some great deals and discount on tinned fish. It might be a good idea to join Prime (even as a trial) now to save big with exclusive deals on Prime Day; or on any other day, Prime benefits include FAST, FREE delivery.

Smelt Fish Protein Bowl

Besides salmon, mackerel, milkfish, hairtail ribbon fish, this high calcium smelt fish (oven-roast or pan-fried) can also be protein entree to these protein bowl meals.

Oven-roast or pan-fried, these smelt fish (also known as capelin or Japanese masagos) are deliciously crispy and makes protein bowls such a healthy delight to enjoy.

If you are not a fan of fish, you can opt for other seafood option or stick with chicken.

Curry Spiced Trout Fillets

Whole fish tastes better when cooked on the bone; and whole fish, especially when it is still swimming in the tank, is probably one of the freshest!

No whole fish today but fillets of trout are used here; just because fresh fillets (not labeled as "previously frozen") were available from the market's seafood section. These fillets may well work into my favor today, as the marinade will be readily and quickly absorbed into the fish, and certainly makes cleaner and fuss-free food preparation (as with whole fish, comes an additional step to proper clean the inside of the fish).

No time? Season with a little salt and pepper. 2 minutes more? Prepare some spice seasoning as marinade. With 5 minutes extra-time to spare, mince up ginger-green onions paste on top of the spice seasoning.

Mackerel Protein Bowl

Besides lean fish such as tilapia, barramundi, snapper, trout, we also love oily (high in omega-3) fishes such as salmon, sardines, milkfish and mackerel.

Our family usually fall back on easy and fuss-free preparation methods e.g. en-papillote, oven-roast/grill when enjoying these fishes.

Oven-Roasted/Grilled Mackerel is so delicious, and super easy to prepare. They make protein bowls such pleasurable treats.

Small kitchen appliances such as air-fryer, table-top ovens are fabulous kitchen helpers when preparing such delicious, healthy meals.

Shrimps, Eggs, Tomatoes, Broccoli Bowl

Shrimp bowl is one of my favorite bowls to make because it's quick, easy and delicious. Quick because it takes much shorter time to cook shrimps than chicken or fish. Easy because it just needs basics like salt and pepper to bring out its flavors. Delicious because IT JUST IS.

If you also enjoy shrimp bowls (be it shrimp grain bowls, shrimp veggie bowls), I hope you can find some quick inspiration.

Do you currently own an air-fryer? I do not and still using conventional oven or sometimes toaster oven to do all the baking, roasting and grilling.

While cooking the shrimps in the oven, make sheet-pan eggs or ramekin eggs at the same time in the same oven.

Jalapeno Shrimps Sausage Veggies Bowl

This Jalapeno Shrimps and Sausage Veggies Bowl is a flavor-packed one-dish meal that you can happily enjoy any month of the year. Healthily loaded with garlic steamed vegetables, topped with delicious oven-roasted shrimps and breakfast sausages.

Cooking the shrimps, sausages, and jalapeno altogether on a sheet-pan in the oven is one of the easiest fuss-free cooking prep.; at the same time, the ingredients flavor up one another so you actually do not have to depend on any other seasoning/marinade.

Do you currently own an air-fryer? I do not and still using conventional oven or sometimes toaster oven to do all the baking, roasting and grilling. You can also make Sheet-Pan Fish with Asparagus and Bell Peppers or Sheet-Pan Beans and Veggies.

Other variations of Shrimps Veggies Bowls: Shrimps Veggies Bowls with Avocado and Tofu, Shrimps Veggies Bowls with Avocado and Radish

Oven Roast Belt/ Ribbon/ Hairtail Fish

Belt fish, also known as cutlass fish, ribbon fish or hairtail fish resembles a thin ribbon or belt (therefore the name) with a sharp pointed head. Whole fish or frozen sections can be usually found in Asian (Korean and Chinese) supermarket. I bought frozen sections (frozen ribbon fish rolls) from online grocery store earlier, not knowing how I want to cook it. This fish is best pan-fried; but since I hardly prep the pan or wok for frying, opted for it to be grilled/roasted in the oven just like other types of fish such as salmon, mackerel, milkfish.

And personally, any grilled/roasted fish is great for protein bowls. It may not turn out as crispy as pan-fried version but this alternative delicate way of cooking helps to preserve the mild briny flavors and its nutrition - protein and omega-3 cannot be undermined.

Oven-Baked Shrimps Protein Bowl

Shell-on, shell-off, head or headless, we enjoy all of them. Shrimps!

Shrimps Salad Bowls are less common in salad shops; even there is, it's at a premium, sometimes even more expensive than salmon bowls. So it's best to prepare Shrimps Protein Bowl at home.

I have made shrimp bowls many times but each time, the bowl turn out different (yet always delicious!) because the shrimps are sometimes seasoned differently and vegetables are also changed out depending on seasons and availability.

Baked Mackerel Veggies Bowl

Besides salmon and grilled milkfish in seafood protein bowls, our family also enjoys oven-baked mackerel.

With its fishy reputation, some people may find the taste of mackerel too strong, too fish, too oily. But for the same reasons, we enjoy mackerel for its rich, distinct flavors. Its flesh is also moist and flaky.

One-Pot Shrimp Quinoa

Swap out multi-grains in this One-Pot Shrimp Rice for quinoa; and make Duck & Shrimp Quinoa, Veggie Bowl similar to this Duck Protein Bowl, just better.

Milkfish Belly Veggie Bowl

Besides frozen milkfish belly, whole milkfish is also available in 99 Ranch Market, select locations in California. However, de-boning this notoriously boney fish, said to have more than 100 to almost over 200 fish bones, is not going to be an easy task.

Oven-roast/grill milkfish belly and shrimps with broccoli, cabbage

Meanwhile, I am happy and satisfied with frozen milkfish belly. The preparation is easy and Oven-Roast Milkfish Belly is belly delicious.

Shrimp Bowl with Spicy Water Spinach/Kang Kong

Tuck into this easy delicious Argentine red shrimp bowl with bonus add-on spicy water spinach (also known as kang kong).

If you are wondering why the egg is in such an "unnatural" shape, check out this quick Sheet Pan Egg recipe. While doing that, don't miss out other busy weeknight shrimp bowl recipes (e.g. Salsa Jalapeno Shrimp Bowl).

Oven/ Pan-Roasted Whole Cuttlefish Protein Bowl

Similar to delicious oven-roasted shrimps, this Oven Roasted Whole Cuttlefish Veggies Bowl is equally easy to prepare and to put together.

If you prefer shrimps, these Shrimps Veggies Bowls are always available:  Shrimps Veggies Bowls with Avocado and Tofu, Shrimps Veggies Bowls with Avocado and Radish

Oven-Roasted Gulf Shrimps Veggies Bowl

Oven-Roasted Shrimps Veggie Bowl again because this is one of the easiest no-fuss delicious low-carb bowl-meal to prepare, zero to hero, in less than 30 minutes

Leftover Fish Egg Frittata (+ Veggies + Oats)

Most of the times, there are no leftovers when it comes to cooked fish. Unlike leftover chicken, leftover cooked fish is trickier to deal with. But especially during inflationary times when bulk-buying groceries/produce/food items gets more bang for the buck - that's when you do buy more then usual, cook more than usual and THERE WILL BE leftovers.

Nothing comes to waste when it comes to frugal-living cooking, even for a tricky leftover cooked fish. There is always my beloved egg frittatas to turn to e.g. Onion Egg Frittata, Chive Egg Frittata, Gouda Cheese Egg Frittata and Frozen Veggies Egg Frittata.

So, the leftover snapper fillets from last night dinner were transformed to this Leftover Fish Egg Frittata upgraded with veggies and rolled oats.

Leftover cooked fish tend to be "dry", adding vegetables such as shredded carrots, or roasted zucchini helps re-introduce a little more moisture into the frittata. I also added (or sprinkled) some oats on top before oven-cooking the frittata, to make it texturally more exciting (plus it's added fiber too!).

Oh did I say? Though made into a protein bowl lunch here, these leftover fish egg frittata can be a great idea for a nutritious breakfast as well (yeah, that's rolled oats in there! right?)

Salsa Red Sauce Jalapeno Shrimps

There were no fresh tomatoes or canned tomatoes in the kitchen to make Tomato Shrimps; and that leftover store-bought salsa in the jar was just too little for dipping that entire bag of tortilla chips.

Luckily, what's "little" and remaining is perfect as "bottom-of-the-jar salsa" to marinate/season these shrimps to make Salsa Red Sauce Jalapeno Shrimps.

Asian-Style Whole Fish En Papillote/ Parchment-Cooking

Fitting whole fish such as trout, sea bass in the wok-steamer has always been a problem. The wok-steamer method tends to work better for smaller-size fish (e.g. Pickled Chili Steamed Tilapia, Steamed Rockfish), so bigger fish finds its way in En-Papillote/ Parchment Cooking (see Herb-Roasted Whole Trout En-Papillote) - which is also one of the easiest methods (one of my favorite ways) to prep and cook fish (whole or fillets).

Whole Barramundi, Tomatoes, Green Onions in Soy Sauce-Sesame Oil

The entire fish can be roasted in the oven without enclosing in parchment packet; however, if the intention is to enjoy moist, succulent, tender steamed fish with some gravy and sauce; en-papillote or cooking in enclosed parchment packet might be the closest as it gets to steaming in a wok/pot over the stove.

Crabs Veggie Wraps/ Bowl

These Oven-Baked/Roasted Soft-Shelled Crabs may not be as equally crispy as deep-fried battered ones but they are perfectly justified as low-calorie high-protein seafood filling healthy wraps;

Oven Baked/ Roasted Shrimps Veggies Bowl

Fuss-free preparation, clean-eating yet flavor-packed one-dish meal that you can happily enjoy any month of the year. This Oven Roasted Shrimps Veggies Bowl is loaded with healthy steamed cabbage, zucchini, bell peppers and leafy greens then topped with delicious oven-roasted shrimps.

Other variations of Shrimps Veggies Bowls: Shrimps Veggies Bowls with Avocado and Tofu, Shrimps Veggies Bowls with Avocado and Radish

Oven-Roasted Capelin (Smelt) Fish

The Pan-Fried Capelin Fish (part of Smelt fish family) were a real tasty treat but this Oven-Grilled/ Roasted Capelin/ Smelt Fish are even better, as they are equally delicious yet easier to execute.
