Olallieberry U-Pick

"Live each season as it passes - breathe the air, drink the drink, taste the fruit". You have heard this before, and now you are hearing it again. But I can't emphasize it enough. I've gone to pick berries again. I thought it would be my last time but the fever seems to have spread from here to there and back here again.

Berry nice! Berry fun ! Berry Berry! Gone ~berry berry~ picking. “Olallie” is a word for berry that was used by the Native Americans of the Pacific Northwest. Berry Berry U-Pick! Olallieberries U-Pick! (oops, tigerfish gone berry crazy!).

Olallieberry (pronounced oh-la-leh). My first encounter with olallieberry was almost a year ago, after tasting an olallieberry pie in Duarte Tavern and blogging about the fruit.

Olallieberry certainly has a complicated heritage - a cross between the loganberry (itself a cross between blackberry and raspberry) and the youngberry (itself a cross between blackberry and dewberry). Berry complicated. As the olallieberry has blackberry on both sides of its parentage, it exhibits many similar characteristics of the blackberry.

Looking alike some special vineyard variety

Berry speaks: I'm just here for a short while for you...1st three weeks in June

Most berries have high antioxidants levels

To here...

What's best - at $2/lb, these olallieberries are organically certified

With four punnets, I paid 6 bucks (hey, $6 for these organic berries is relatively inexpensive, ok?), and I'm not going to make any pies or bakes out of them, for reasons you know why. It'll just be berries as-is, with yogurt, with breakfast cereals, smoothies...hey, that's soooooo berry boring. Ok then, berries anything else ?

you are making me berry envy ;p I have never seen such interesting breed of berries here. And for $2 /lb? What a steal!

If I go pick the berries, I am sure more of them would end up in my belly than in the punnet. They look so deliciously irresistable.

Wow, they are so cheap !! Hybrid of berries ? hehe :) You're so lucky, I've not tasted olallie berries before. How does it taste like ?

I'm forwarding this post to a farmer friend in Massachusetts who hybridizes berries. I've never heard of olallieberries, but they do look amazing.

We always pick these at the open field in the countryside every year and make them into jams. :) Every year the flavour is different from the last. :)

I'm so envious of the good weather you guys have in the States. That's so cheap as well :sigh: Enjoy it anyway :D

$2/lb is very cheap actually. Was thinking to bring the kids to pick some berries this Summer too. But it's $3.25/pint, more expensive than the supermarket and I have to pick it under the hot sun some more....so not sure anymore. :P

Never tasted this before. Very interesting!! So they taste like blackberry?

tigerfish said...

mandy, you have tempted me with so many of your berries conconction that I need to get a berry fix!

victor, hahahah...cannot lah, even organic...still need to rinse them before you eat. If non-organic, worse....got lotsa of pesticide residue.

MW, taste almost like blackberries, just a bit sweeter. You don't see them in farmer's market at your place? Since its season is short, these berries may end up in pies most of the times. Look out for olallieberry pie!

ming merciless, they are berry sweet (as in...relative to other berries). :D

I've never heard of olallieberries before! They look so nice and ripe. You know what, I would put them in a salad (not a fruit salad)! I love berries in a "savoury" salad!

precious pea, I think blackberries, and raspberries are more common. Olallie only grows in small volume since its season is so short.

lydia, I'm so interested to know what an expert of berries would say :D

jackson, hahah...you will go crazy man, the olallie plant is so pricky :O

valentina, I just love the freshness of self-picked organic fruits...do visit California during summer and your dream will come true :)

big boys oven, these berries would be in good baking hands, if they were made available to you.

cooking ninja, isn't that so interesting what each season brings...:)

hedgehog,it's not good weather everytime. So treasure every moment.

little corner of mine, looks like you have already done the maths and find it not worthwhile. I thought picking your own would generally be cheaper....hmmmm

Hey there, I can't believe that I spread the berry fever back to you! hehe... I've never heard of olallieberry before. They do like like the blackberry that I could pick on the road around my house in Sept... Mmm... looks really nice and juicy! :P

blur mommy, yes, very much like blackberries. :)

team bsg, hhaha...there are blueberries and blackberries - but no "blueblack"-berries...wahahah!

wokandspoon, hmmm...worth a try. I do have some stinky blue cheese in my fridge..I wonder if I can do a salad with crumbles of blue cheese and these berries :p

windy, picked along the road? SO much in abundance!? :O

sukanya, all (or most) fruits are, isn't it? :D

I L.O.V.E. Olalliebeeries! They're supposed to be from the Pacific Northwest but I haven't seen any since I moved to Seattle from California. I am soooo jealous right now! I wish we had Olallieberry U Pick up here.

tigerfish said...

patti, I was thinking you might find them in Seattle. Maybe you could get the other "cross" - marionberry ?
You can always move back to California....:D or just visit.
